Arrowhead Hunting And Rock Collecting

We weren't planning to go rock and arrowhead hunting in Arizona. My wife and I just liked that hotspring in the desert. It was agood place to escape the Michigan winter for a while.

Then we met Felix, an old Mayan Indian living in an old RV. After sharing meals and campfires for a week, he took us into the desert to show us ancient metates (grain-grinding stones) and arrowheads. We also found hundreds of beautiful rocks of every type, including Apache Tears, Fire Agate, and various quartzes.

Irina, a nineteen-year-old "rainbow kid," who had been living in her van for months, rode with Felix in his old pickup. We took our van. We spent two hours at the first stop. The recent rain had made the rocks and artifacts stand out, washing them clean. We were mostly just rock collecting.

Irina and my wife Ana found odd pieces that may have been arrowheads. We found old pottery pieces too, and Felix came back with half of a pot painted with an intricate design. It was probably hundreds of years old. Felix had been in the desert for years, and kept seeing things we missed.

Pony Express Ruins

At our second stop, Felix showed us ruins of an old Pony Express station. Unmarked and forgotten, the grass-and-mud-block walls were still partially standing. I realized we still hadn't seen a single other car. There are some isolated areas in Arizona, and this is one of them. We started arrowhead hunting around the ruins, because Felix insisted the building would have been fired upon by arrows.

Up the hill behind the ruins, Felix showed us rocks with six-inch wide holes a foot deep or more, and perfectly round. They were filled with water - their purpose, according to Felix. We like water with fewer bugs, but he and Irina drank the water collected in them. It was a peaceful spot, overlooking the valley below.

Arrowhead Hunting Success

Over the hill, we had some luck searching for rocks and arrowheads, but not like Felix. We saw hundreds of pieces of pottery, but all very plain looking. He found pottery that had beautiful designs on it, and metates. He found a tiny clear quartz arrowhead, perfectly made, that had probably been used to hunt small birds two hundred years earlier.

Each of us wandered a bit. Ana and I made it back to the van first, and when Irina and Felix returned, we cooked beans with instant rice on our camp stove. After the meal, we said goodbyes, and traded addresses. They went back to the hotsprings, while we headed the other way with bags of rocks, an antelope antler, and two broken arrowheads.

Notes:

For interesting rocks, go out after a rain and you can see Fire-agate and Apache Teardrops laying on the sand. For the best rock collecting, visit the designated rockhound areas in southeastern Arizona. As for arrowhead hunting, and ancient pottery, enjoy yourself, but it may be illegal to keep any artifacts now. The BLM office in Safford can give you directions and more information.

Staying Calm: Tips for Parents

My beloved car had just blown its engine, pregnancy was making me crazy, and we had no money in our pockets (or anywhere else). When I slammed our front door, I knocked the only plant I had managed to keep alive all season off the windowsill. Just as the pottery hit the floor and cracked, so did I. I lay face down in black potting soil and pottery shards and let my Labrador lick the tears off my dirty face.
That was just before the birth of our first child. Since then, there have been countless times when I've wanted to curl up on the carpet and scream, but the ever-watching kids have made that a luxury I can no longer afford.
It's more difficult now, too. One of the biggest surprises of parenthood is the absolute anger we can feel in no time - and with very little provocation. Start with a sleep-deprived parent, throw in a troubled teenager, a whining child, or a colicky newborn, and even the coolest cats can lose their minds.
Releasing our anger in the wrong ways can lead to emotional and physical scars on our kids. When infants are shaken, even for one heated moment, they can die. And it takes only a moment to harm their little souls.
As they watch us, these young ones are paying particular attention to the way we handle difficult situations. And what we model for them will, in large part, determine their success at controlling their own tempers as they grow up.
So, even in the face of total exasperation, we must stay calm. For a long time, the advice has been to simply go away for a moment and count to ten, but, as all parents know, sometimes that's not so easy. A small child may be frightened when mommy or daddy leaves to take a time-out. Sometimes counting to ten just doesn't do it, and there's no time to count to 100.
So here are a few more tips, compiled just for parents, to help you deal with anger and stay calm with your kids.
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES The best time to work on staying cool is before you're hot.
*Declare a zero-tolerance policy on the out-of-control temper.* You must decide, for yourself, that behaving this way is simply not okay. Remind yourself that it is possible to manage your emotions. Think back to times when you were successful at controlling your anger. Perhaps you bit your tongue rather than hollering at the boss. Or you were just about to let it fly at your husband when your in-laws called and suddenly you couldn't believe the sweetness of your own voice. We all have the power to suddenly change our mood.
*Be prepared.* Lots of things can go wrong each day; be ready for them. For example, if you've got babies, pack a bag with at least one extra shirt for everyone, a complete outfit for each toddler, and several for the infants. Stow them in the back of the car with extra diapers and plenty of baby wipes.
*Is there anything specific that triggers your anger?* Keep a journal for those times when you feel like you're ready to fly off the handle. Do you notice any patterns--time of day, hunger level, lack of exercise, a full calendar? Even noise from a TV or radio can contribute to a feeling of over-stimulation, which can set off an emotional explosion. Create a nurturing environment for yourself.
*Take care of yourself.* We're more likely to react to a situation - rather than to simply act - when we haven't gotten enough sleep or we haven't been eating right. Start your day with a light breakfast that includes carbohydrates and protein. Then continue to eat for energy throughout the day.
*Daily exercise* provides a physical release to help you control anxiety and aggression throughout the day. A half-hour of kickboxing can release tension you didn't even know you had.
*A regular routine of prayer and meditation* can calm a chaotic mind. Sit quietly for at least 15 minutes a day. Practice a few yoga stretches when things get tense.
*Decide how you'll deal with certain situationS before they arise.* What makes you want to blow your top? Whether it's toddler temper tantrums or the preschooler's occasional whine, determine how you will handle those things beforehand - while you're calm.
*Understand your child.* Read up on child development and put yourself in their shoes. Ask yourself: "What's it like to be two and not have the skills to express what you want?" "What's it like for a newborn who finds herself with a gut-wrenching bellyful of gas and doesn't understand why it hurts?" Kids act the way they do for a reason. Often, there's a developmental milestone associated with a child's behavior. Understanding the reasons behind our kids' actions can go a long way in helping us develop a sense of empathy, compassion and, ultimately, tolerance.
IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT *Take a few deep breaths.* Diaphragmatic breathing helps reduce stress. This will also give you a time-out, long enough to make a rational assessment of the situation and to help you regain a sense of control.
*Visualize* yourself as the cool, calm, person you strive to be. Whom do you know who embodies these traits? Imagine this person's reaction to the situation.
*Stop. Think. Then speak.* Remind yourself of the importance of keeping yourself under control. If you feel anger building inside, don't pick up a baby. Ask for help or wait until you are calm.
*Consciously lower your voice.* Yelling will only make a child angry and defensive, and it can scare a young child. A soft tone says you're in control.
*Don't catastrophize.* Resist the temptation to blow something out of proportion. Avoid using the words "always" and "never" when you talk to yourself and others.
*Distract yourself.* Is there any way you can laugh about the situation? Ask yourself: what is the real significance of the situation that triggered my rage? It's more important to model a healthy approach to stress than it is to win certain battles. Choose those battles carefully.
Afterwards, reinforce your love for the child and retreat to assess the way you handled the situation. What did you do right? What will you do differently next time?

Creative Uses of Rubber Stamps

Rubber stamps - those cute and creative pieces of rubber (and sometimes wood) that we use for arts and crafts - can be great tools to use for aesthetic and pleasing works of art, no matter how young or old. They are simple and easy to use, and ensure that you or your child can use basic shapes and designs with a minimum of effort. All you really do is dip in the paint and apply, right? This is how most people use them, but there are a couple of other creative ways to use rubber stamps.

The first way to use rubber stamps is actually to make pottery. I bet you didn't think you could use them to make pottery, but you definitely can. All you do is take some polymer clay - the kind you can bake - and impress the clay with a stamp while it's still soft. Dipping them in multiple colors of paint will also impress the paint into the clay along with the design. After this, just put on a couple of layers of glaze and put the clay into an oven. When it's done, you'll have beautiful and creative pottery, made simple!

The second way to use rubber stamps creatively is to personalize coffee mugs or t-shirts, or really any surface or material that can be used or worn to make it special. Just get stamps in the shapes of individual letters and use them together to spell out a name or phrase. Your child or significant other will smile when he or she sees a t-shirt or coffee mug with their name on it - and if they're a big coffee drinker, I bet you'll see them use that special mug over and over again! Just cover the mug with a coat of sealant so its dishwasher safe and you're set.

There are many other ways to be creative with rubber stamps; they're just waiting to be discovered by you and your kids today! So if you're looking for a cheap new alternative way to doing crafts with the kids give stamping a try today!

From custom self inking stamps to Christmas rubber stamps, stamping is a great way to express your artistic talent and creativity. Almost any scrapbooking page can be enhanced with the use of a few well placed stamps and most other craft projects could use some stamping too. Try rubber stamping today!

Tin (10) Years Together - The Tin Anniversary & How to Celebrate It

Ten years together. One-hundred-twenty months of wedded bliss. Seems like yesterday you tied the knot, said "I Do", then headed off to your honeymoon in the Catskills, or Niagara Falls, or maybe the Grand Canyon and Vegas. Ten years later, and you're wondering where did the time go?

Traditionally, the tenth is celebrated as the 'tin' anniversary. The reason for this could be something exotic, such as the acknowledgment that tin is more durable than paper, used for the first year of marriage. Or it could be recognition that by ten years a couple's golden years are still a long way off. It could even be something as simple as the obvious connection between the words ten and tin. Who knows? The reality is, that in our culture, people recognize ten years with something crafted from tin. So what are some ideas for this? What tin items can be had, or created to salute ten years together? Here are tin (10) ideas to consider:

1 Pie plates. Why not purchase ten of them, then fill them with ten of your mate's favorite delicacies--pies of every description he or she may have mentioned during the past 120 months that they particularly enjoy? Can't eat that much Peach/Mango pie? Take it to a shelter, and serve the clients there. You'll feel better, and so will they.

2 Two tin cups. Take these cute cups, ask your spouse to put their left-over change in them, and when they're full, cash it in, and go on a date.

3 Tin picture frames (one or two). Fill them with photo memories of the past ten years. If done correctly, tin can be fashioned in many ways, twisted, tweaked and turned just so to make an attractive frame. It can even be tinted with the right paints & dyes.

4 A tin tree plaque. Just like carving your initials in a tree, only not as damaging, and available for additional inscriptions. Attach a section of tin that's big enough to scratch messages and other short expressions on. Use small brads, the smaller the better to preserve the tree, and post the message tin on a tree in your own back yard. Scratch a ten year message to each other, and watch the tree grow around it. This 'scratching tin' has the added advantage of being portable. If you move, take it with you and attach it to another tree.

5 Tin pocket reminders. It's been a good ten years, but ten years of marriage isn't easy, regardless of how much you love and care for each other. Instead of the usual romantic pocket reminder cards, scratch something on a tin the size of a standard business card, and carry it with you till number eleven.

6 Tin popcorn bowl. Remember that tin popcorn server you had when you were a kid? Go to E-Bay and look for one. I'm betting your spouse had one of those, too. He or she would love to fill it with buttery, fresh popcorn then sit in front of the TV and share ten years together with you. Recommendation for a movie? Try 'Ghost'. Just don't expect to make it through the pottery-wheel scene. Put the kids to bed first.

7 Tin earrings. She'll love the thought of having been married ten years enough that she'll wear them on that date you paid for with the change from your tin cups.

8 Tin cufflinks. He'll love these enough he (or she) may wear them on that date, and for many occasions afterward. There are jewelers everywhere who can craft such things for you, or you can look on-line for these items.

9 Your own tin memento. There are many places to have things manufactured, mementos that use items from your personal collection and turn them into heirlooms. On-line craft creators such as Etsy and others are just a mouse click away.

10 A tin '10'. Go on-line to the craft person you found and have them create a tin numeral ten to hang wherever you choose. You an customize it any way you want, with personal items and/or anniversary things used already.

Ten years of marriage is a milestone that any couple can be proud of. Though the traditional marker for ten years is something made of tin, it doesn't have to be something drab or unremarkable. Tin lasts a long time, and, unlike other similar metals in the periodic table, tin doesn't oxidize well, so it doesn't corrode. Indeed, tin is used to coat steel to keep that metal from corroding. Just so, a marriage recognized by tin (10) years, is well on its way to being steeled against any corrosive elements, and, happily, your union will last a very long time. Enjoy the popcorn, and the movie!

About Country French Paint Colors

Country French paint colors combine elegance with rustic charm. This works great for families because you can still have nice items that are durable for kids. The key to this style is to use worn woods, and natural stone paired with brighter paint colors. This style can work anywhere in the house such as a kitchen, garden, or even a bedroom. Use paint when decorating to save money and create your own unique design style. This keeps your room from looking like a theme restaurant.

Rustic colors are worn and can be used throughout a Country French room. Use worn woods that look aged. Paint a kitchen island with layers of paint. This will stand out against standard cabinets without overwhelming the space. Paint treatments can make your new condo look like it's an older manor. Layer colors of paint that are close in tone for a stucco wall appearance.

French Country style uses cheerful colors. This makes it perfect for a kitchen or laundry room. Adding fun colors to a room will make doing chores that much easier. Bright blue and yellow are traditional Country French colors. If these colors seem too country or bright to use on the walls, keep the walls a neutral white or beige. Country houses often feature wood beams and plaster walls. Bring in a pottery vase filled with fresh sunflowers to get your theme across easily. Avoid cheap accessories with roosters or sunflowers on them. This may make your home feel less elegant. Instead think of how a home in the French countryside would actually look. It would be filled with antique silverware, furniture that has been passed down from generation to generation, crisp white linens, and handmade pottery.

Elegant colors can work in a French Country room. Worn blues and aged gray create a restful bedroom. Accent with Queen Anne style furniture and a bed canopy made in a toile fabric. Add a country air by making the inside of the canopy out of a checked fabric for contrast and a little bit of country charm.

What's Dining Room Furniture?

The family's over and they're hungry. They want food and they want to eat that food. They're looking for a room - the dining room - where they can sit and eat. They enter that room and, lo and behold, you have not decorated it because you don't know a thing about dining room furniture.

It's a tragedy but you've been doing your research and have a good idea what you might need. The dining furniture no longer scares you and you embark on a journey to find just the right stuff.

Dining Table

Perhaps the single most important part of dining room furniture would be the dining table. Let's be honest, the room is a dining room because it's where people go to dine. And, as typical in the western world, people eat off tables. Now, there are a variety of tables that can be bought to satisfy your dining room furniture needs. For instance, you can grab a nice wooden table or a more contemporary glass top table. Which one is right for you will depend on the look of your house and decorative angle you're looking to go.

As far as chairs go, you should look into getting a dinette set. Dinette sets offers not only the table but the chairs as well. This is great because you'll know they match for sure and you won't have to run around looking for something that looks just similar.

Accessories

Now, in my opinion the table and the chairs that go with the table are the most important part of the room. If I must say so myself I'd have nothing but a table and chairs in my dining room. But that's not the way it works and many people want to know what other kind of dining room furniture exist.

A curio cabinet would be my next choice. I know I've seen them before in homes but never knew the name. Basically they're display cases for anything you want to display. Perhaps your finest china, or maybe a collections of pottery you've acquired (this seems to be a common theme).

Rugs would be next, but probably should come earlier, depending on the room. For a hardwood room, I'd go with a rug. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes from area rugs, to runner rugs, to border rugs. They're a great accessory and sure to complete the style you had in mind when you bought your dining room furniture.

Lastly, a home bar or wine storage would complete the look of the room. This, of course, seems ideal for a larger dining room or perhaps an entirely new room altogether. But, if your dining room is large enough to have a home bar as well, it's a great hit with guests and family. It looks great too when it matches the décor of your tables, chairs, and curio cabinetry.

Overall, dining room furniture really has a lot to do with the size of the dining room. A bigger dining room can fit the many accessories whereas a smaller room would be ideal with just the table and chairs.
